What to see in Vimianzo

Vimianzo

After visiting so many towns on the Costa Da Morte with its landscape full of cliffs and rugged terrain, the visitor who arrives at Vimianzo finds a concello (town hall) located in a valley that one of the tributaries of the Rio Grande covers from one end the other. It is a place to surround yourself with natural beauties and among the things to see in Vimianzo are prehistoric structures, castles and churches from medieval times and artifacts from the 18th century.

About the area

Vimianzo presents a great wealth of archaeological elements of megalithism. It stands out for being one of the places with the highest concentration of dolmens and burial mounds in all of Galicia.

Among them are Pedra Cuberta where the first cave paintings appear in a dolmen in the northwest of the peninsula.

Currently, work is being done to put these monuments with value and safeguard them.

In recent years, several rock art engravings have been discovered, where the best known are the petroglyphs of Boallo and O Pedrouzo.

There are also several castros in the colonies and valleys of Vimianzo, although one of the most important is the Castro de As Barreiras, in the municipal capital.

Vimianzo has livestock and agriculture as the strongest professions in the sector, being a mostly rural municipality. Most of the farms that exist are dedicated to dairy production.

Vimianzo also has a large area full of trees of all kinds, since they are also dedicated to logging and transporting wood.

Vimianzo Castle

It is located at the entrance of the municipality and its construction dates from the 13th century. It belonged to one of the aristocratic families of the time and witnessed violent times, with disputes and battles that led to sieges, partial destruction of the structure and reconstruction, the most recent being in the nineteenth century. For two years it was the prison of the Archbishop of Compostela Alonso de Fonseca II by order of Bernal Moscoso.

Today the visitor can appreciate its imposing structure, very well preserved, with the bridge over the moat. Inside there is a permanent Art Show with artisans working live and the public can appreciate works of pottery and glass jewelry, among others.

Capela de Santa Cristiña

The parishioners ask Santa Cristiña for the sowing, since her cult is directly linked to the agrarian tradition and the raising of cattle in the area. To such an extent that access to land that the locals consider sacred and with curative properties for livestock is preserved near the altar. The corresponding alms must be honored as payment for the help of the Saint.

This hermitage belongs to the parish of San Pedro de Berdoias. It was built in the Middle Ages, in granite and was designed as a small rectangular nave and a rectangular main chapel. Its gabled cornice supports the bell tower and a stone cross at the top.

After the pilgrimage mass that takes place at the end of July, the pilgrims take ground at the foot of their altar to bless the farms.

Throughout Galicia these structures that vary in size and are evidence of the prehistoric settlers of the region are scattered.

At the beginning of the tour, which takes just over three hours, it begins in the town of Vimianzo and in total there are nine structures that are visited, each one with a particular history. The most prominent are:

Visit the Mosquetín Mills and Batanes

In Mosquetín, on the banks of the Rio Grande, we find this artisan structure dating from the 17th century. It was a center of great activity with seven cereal mills and two fulling mills, which, taking advantage of the force of the river, were a system that hit woolen textiles to compress the fabric. Villagers from many places came to the site with their tissues to be “mashed” and of course, they paid for this service that could last 28 to 30 hours.

Winter was the best time, with the river flow at its highest.

Today you can see the two buildings and the system that became obsolete with the advance of the industrial revolution and the rise of electricity.
The Deputation of La Coruña acquired the property and carried out restoration work and adapted the spaces so that they were open to the public.
