Right in the middle of the Costa da Morte, we find this fishing village, which is a concello (town hall), parish and municipality forming part of the Cabana de Bergantiños region. Built in front of the sea, the simple life and its stone buildings give account of its existence through the centuries. Laxe is at a distance of 70 kilometers from La Coruña and if you plan a visit, there are countless places to see in Laxe.

About the area

One of the municipalities of the Costa da Morte that has the most visits per year, especially in the summer time, when tourists and villagers get together to enjoy a day of sunbathing on the beaches or having a drink in the many bars with terrace containing.

The profession to highlight is fishing, where most of the life that is done there is in the port unloading the collection of the day and keeping it in the huts of each shellfish.

One of the stops to visit if you come to Laxe is the Playa de los Cristales, a place where numerous small crystals have formed due to the fact that garbage was thrown there before, and the force of the sea has made it a quiet place with views magnificent towards these beautiful crystals.

Not far from the beach is the lighthouse, which has not been used for years but continues to attract the attention of thousands of tourists, since being in such good condition you can see what the tools used by ships at sea to position themselves were like. .

Parish Church of Santa María de la Atalaia de Laxe

Strolling through the picturesque central town of Laxe, on a hill looking towards the pier, we find the figure of the church, whose construction dates from the 13th century AD. Its privileged location allowed us to see the danger from there in advance, and this made it a permanent lookout post for the town’s watchtower. Over the centuries it was remodeled, the most important being the 15th century remodeling, where the Gothic style that we can see today was defined.

Soesto Beach

If you want to disconnect from the madding crowd and get in touch with nature in its purest form away from the urban area, do not hesitate to visit Playa Soesto. Despite being located just ten minutes by car from the town of Laxe, access is only by car. It has a length of 850 meters. The waves are strong and it is very frequented by local and foreign surfers. It has health services and you can find beach bars in the area.

Laxe lighthouse

Its construction dates from 1920 and from its location you can see the Ría de Corme-Laxe, where the ocean and the rivers of the area converge, and the Dune of Monte Branco, one of the highest in all of Europe. If your visit takes place at the end of the day, the spectacular sunset will not disappoint and will take with you unrepeatable images as a souvenir.

Visit Museo do Mar

It is located in the historic center and is a compendium of the fishing activity of the town. There you will find aged images along with stories of those villagers, as well as old maps and navigational instruments.

Get up close and personal and take lots of photos at Praia dos Cristals

Playa de los Cristales in Castilian, is rather a space located next to the town’s cemetery and is flooded with pieces of glass of all colors. The curious anecdote indicates that it was a glass dump and that the sea and time were in charge of polishing it and returning it to shore.

Museum of mar

  • Description: Learn how Galicians have lived off the sea for a lifetime. Located in the old Civil Guard barracks, this four-story museum will connect you closely with the sea and the techniques used by our fishermen. Telling the history of the town of Laxxe and the regions of Bergantiños and Soneira from the end of the 19th century to the 70s of the last century. With a large archive made up of more than 67,000 photographs that reflect the history of Lex and much of the Costa da Morte, coming from Plácido Vidal and his son Joé María, which form the main piece of the museum.

Laxe lighthouse and recreation area

  • Description: Built in 1920 it is exactly the same as the Roncudo. At his feet, the Playa Arnela was wrecked in 1972, a ship that was heading to Corme when it could not resist the waves, thus reaching the rocks of Punta da Insua, saving only two crew members. This sea is unforgiving. The views, simply magnificent, on one side we find the Corme-Laxe estuary and the other open sea. We can see how the estuary merges with the open sea, giving way to the Atlantic. A few meters before the lighthouse we will find “A Epera”, a bronze sculpture built as a tribute to all the men of the sea and their women, who are impatiently awaiting their arrival.

Crystal beach

  • Description: Located in the Baleeira inlet, at Cape Laxe, this old glass garbage can turned into a green container. From landfills we made beaches. When in Laxe they decided to throw the bottles into the sea, it, over the years, gave them back a beach created by colored sand.
