What to see in Carnota

Carnota

The diversity of the landscape of this town located to the west of La Coruña, always leaves the visitor wanting to fully explore the region and find those hidden treasures to see in Carnota . The territory extends through valleys, mountains and coasts where nature has painted original views that leave us enraptured on a natural canvas. Its granaries, natural granite monuments and white sand shores bathed by the sea do not disappoint.

About the area

In Carnota it is shown that it was populated since ancient times thanks to the burial mounds and forts that are in the area. The place of Carnota was born in the seventeenth century, but in the nineteenth century it was sacked by French troops in the Spanish War of Independence. In this council we can highlight fishing as the most important profession, which in the past has contributed to the abundant families of this area to be able to get money.

Carnota stands out for its extensive rural tourism, since it contains numerous forests to be able to walk through them and observe the wild animals that there are, with the possibility of approaching them and taking beautiful photos that will be impossible to overcome. It is also famous for having one of the largest granaries in the area, 35 meters long and which today is one of the mandatory stops to go to see it.

We cannot forget the many beaches that there are, with stretches of rocky coastline formed by sand to sunbathe and relax with family or friends.

Church of Santa Comba de Carnota and Hórreo

Very close to the Council of Carnota, just 400 meters away, we find the Church of Santa Comba, with a classic Baroque architectural style.

Located just above what was a Roman temple, its construction was completed in 1755.

The tower, however, was not incorporated until 1825. Nearby we find the surprising hórreo, a raised stone structure, designed to keep moisture and rodents away from the harvest. This, 34 meters long, is one of the largest in Galicia.

Castro Mallou

At 5 kilometers from Carnota through the Barrio Vilar we find the archaeological remains of this primitive settlement.

The Castros were communities that were established surrounding the houses of a stone wall that served as protection. They were located in high positions in order to see any danger in advance.

It is believed that this castro may have been established between the 6th to 8th centuries before the Christian era, during the Iron Age.
The finds include primitive agricultural instruments, a cistern, and remains of pottery.
