What is the largest beach in Galicia?
Carnota Beach is a heavenly place, its crystal clear waters and fine white sand are an invitation to stroll and enjoy its beautiful beaches. These have an invaluable ecological value and a wonderful sunset. In addition, it is home to a wide variety of migratory birds.
It is a place of immense landscape wealth: From giant granaries, through sacred mountains or incredible beaches to waterfalls and hidden pools. Its nature and archeology attract thousands of visitors every season and Carnota beach is full of small and large charms everywhere.
Nature has endowed this area with more than five kilometers of dunes, swamps. Its fauna and flora are exceptional. The mouth of the Vadebois river creates an impressive spectacle in the part that is known as A Boca do Río. And if that weren’t enough, the view of the mighty Mount Pindo, which beautifies the landscape with its 642 meters high.
The beach has bathing areas, which are frequented by countless summer tourists who go to know and enjoy the natural beauties that this emblematic place offers.
Among the monuments and historical constructions of the Carnota municipality are the largest granaries or silos in the world: that of Carnota (recognized as a National Monument) and that of the parish of Lira. In addition, around 900 granaries are inventoried in this place.
The Carnota granary, located near the town’s beaches and Mount Pindo, is one of the oldest, its construction dates from 1768.
The Hórreo de Lira was built between 1779 and 1814. It is located a short distance from the church of Lira.
The beach has a maximum length of 1,328 meters and the cliff reaches 32 meters in height. This cliff and the different rocks that contain it were formed 500 million years ago and its base is made of quartzites and slate, rocks that by their nature are fragmented in the form of flakes. But it is really the erosive action of the sea that has given rise to the whimsical structures carved in the stone.
The entrance to the beach of the Cathedrals is made by stairs that descend to the sand, since the beach ends in narrow stone walls. The entire beach is impressive, but the most amazing formations are to the east, on the right side of the beach facing the sea.
Another of the natural wonders that can be seen in Playa de las Catedrales is the marine life that lives among the rocks that, when the tide goes down, is visible to all: Algae, mussels, limpets, barnacles and small crabs cling to life in this incredible place.
These areas protected by the Natura 2000 Network comprise a 15-kilometer-long coastal stretch along which we can find other impressive sandy areas such as Os Castros and the picturesque port of Rinlo.
This wonderful place is one of the busiest tourist sites in Galicia, which is why the city council has regulated visits in high seasons. If you visit on those dates, you will need a permit for Playa de las Catedrales that you have to request in advance online directly from the Xunta de Galicia.
